Handheld Raman Spectrometer

TruNarc Delta

Characteristics

This is the second generation of a unique handheld Raman spectrometer from Thermo Scientific (USA), designed for the rapid identification of illicit drugs without the need for direct contact. It can measure through transparent plastic and glass packaging, minimizes the risk of contamination, and preserves evidence through non-destructive analysis. A simple test enables the identification of a wide range of drugs and provides clear and definitive results. It is a lightweight handheld instrument with very simple operation.

TruNarc Delta can easily identify not only illicit drugs, but also simulants, sedatives, hallucinogens, and analgesics. In addition to all major drugs (methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin), TruNarc can also analyze common cutting agents, their precursors, and new synthetic drugs, so-called designer drugs.

The second-generation spectral library contains more than 1,200 substances, more than doubling the library size compared with the original TruNarc model. The new generation also offers faster scanning, a user-replaceable battery, touchscreen operation, and increased ruggedness in accordance with MIL-STD-810H and IP64 standards. The H2 (SERS) kit now enables accurate differentiation between fentanyl and methamphetamine.

This new generation of instruments reflects the growing need for rapid, safe, and legally defensible drug detection during operations by CBRNe units, border guards, customs authorities, and forensic teams in international environments. The library has been expanded to include new fentanyl derivatives, 17 nitazene derivatives, and many other substances. Upon request, we can provide you with the current list of substances in the library or a presentation containing more detailed information.

The lifetime system of free automatic online library updates also remains in place, ensuring the continuous expansion of the spectral database.

Comparison of TruNarc and TruNarc Delta Specifications

It remains the case that in TruNarc spectrometers (including TruNarc Delta), the library contains not only the spectrum (or multiple spectra) of each substance itself, but also an optimized algorithm for analyzing the spectrum of real-world samples. The algorithm is capable of detecting the substance even in more complex mixtures and at lower concentrations. This is particularly important when analyzing real-world street drug samples, where sample dilution and the use of cutting and adulterating agents are common.

These algorithms are always fine-tuned for each substance using real-world street samples, and only after successful validation is the substance, together with its algorithm, added to the instrument's database. This is a fundamental difference compared with conventional “universal” handheld Raman spectrometers, which use multicomponent analysis for mixture identification by constructing synthetic mixture spectra. These technologies are suitable for identifying the major components of mixtures, but often fail when analyzing real-world drug samples.

TruNarc technology has undergone several years of intensive development, with the identification algorithms being progressively refined with each new version. TruNarc technology is continuously validated through various testing programs in numerous countries around the world and continues to demonstrate the highest identification success rate for real-world street drug samples. In addition to national agencies in many countries worldwide, it is also used by organizations such as the DEA and Europol.
