FLIR has introduced a new generation of its flagship handheld instruments for measuring radiation levels, locating radioactive materials, and identifying them: the identiFINDER R440 handheld gamma spectrometer.
The second generation brings further improvements to the patented stabilization technology without an internal radioactive source, extends the recommended calibration interval at a calibration facility to 5 years (calibration is now recommended but not required), and, most importantly, introduces new detector materials.
In addition to standard NaI and NaIL detector materials, the new generation is also available with high-resolution detectors based on third-generation LaBr and CLLBC materials.
The new-generation LaBr₃ crystals (New Brilance 390 material), combined with ultra-fast processing electronics, provide not only excellent sensitivity but also an energy resolution of better than 3% FWHM at 662 keV. These crystals are combined with new ZnS(Li) solid-state detectors for neutron detection, offering 3–4 times higher sensitivity than instruments equipped with tritium tubes, while also providing improved mechanical durability.
The identiFINDER R440 therefore fully meets the IP67 standard, including drop resistance.
Crystals made from the new CLLBC material provide an energy resolution only slightly lower than LaBr₃ (better than 4%), while also offering very high neutron sensitivity—up to 9 times higher compared with tritium-based detectors.
A dedicated application is now freely available for smartphones and tablets for both identiFINDER R440 and the new identiFINDER R425. Available for Android and iOS, the application enables easy wireless retrieval of data from the instrument, including spectra and alarms, rapid transmission of data to remote servers, and complete remote control with a virtual display of the instrument shown directly in the application. This significantly enhances operator safety, as the operator does not need to remain at the measurement location throughout the measurement in an area with elevated radiation levels.
