Handheld FTIR/Raman Spectrometer

Gemini

Characteristics

This is a unique handheld spectrometer from Thermo Scientific (USA). A Raman spectrometer, including a flexible probe (FD RMX), and an FTIR spectrometer (similar to the one used in the TD FTX) are integrated into a single instrument. This provides a system offering the broadest possible range of analytical capabilities for substances that produce a vibrational molecular spectrum. The Raman spectrometer enables non-contact measurements, including measurements through transparent and semi-transparent packaging, while the FTIR spectrometer enables the analysis of very small quantities, swab samples, and substances that exhibit extremely strong fluorescence when analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Many of the innovations incorporated into this spectrometer are also related to operational safety, making it possible to safely measure virtually the entire range of explosive and thermally sensitive samples.

The Raman spectrometer with a 785 nm excitation laser offers one of the most versatile solutions in Raman spectroscopy, providing an excellent compromise between sensitivity, spectral range and resolution, sample heating, and fluorescence effects. The integrated FTIR spectrometer, meanwhile, offers outstanding performance for a handheld instrument, incorporating a number of unique technologies that provide very good spectral resolution, compact dimensions, and exceptional spectrometer ruggedness. The spectrometer is supplied as standard with an armored optical probe for the Raman spectrometer, which also enables non-contact measurements in hard-to-reach locations. Raman spectra can also be measured using the integrated vial holder.

New: Low DoseID: The spectrometer can be equipped with specialized software for drug analysis, optimized for detecting low concentrations of active substances in complex mixtures, together with an optimized SERS attachment for measuring low concentrations of substances and detecting fluorescent samples. Thermo has been using its own SERS substrates for many years for drug detection with its TruNarc instrument. More details can be found in the brochure and application note available for download below.

The FTIR spectrometer is equipped with a diamond ATR with a motorized pressure arm that automatically applies a precisely defined force to the sample against the ATR. This is another completely unique solution that is not yet available even on laboratory systems and significantly simplifies the operation of the spectrometer. The spectrometer library contains more than 16,000 unique spectra, while users can easily expand both the Raman and FTIR libraries. The spectrometer software includes a number of unique and patented algorithms that ensure reliable measurements under widely varying environmental conditions (the technology was originally developed primarily for the U.S. military and security agencies) and provide highly reliable substance identification, including mixtures where applicable. The spectrometer is controlled by a powerful internal PC and features a large graphical touchscreen LCD that meets military standards (it is not a conventional touchscreen LCD) and can be operated while wearing protective gloves. At the same time, all spectrometer functions can also be controlled using the integrated keys. The spectrometer is highly rugged and meets the demanding requirements of the MIL-STD-810G standard.

Despite all the features described above, the spectrometer weighs less than 2 kg and provides several hours of continuous battery operation. The user therefore has a highly powerful handheld laboratory for substance identification. The spectrometer can also be equipped with HAZMASTER C3 software, which provides additional information on potential hazards associated with the identified substances.
